Yes and Yes. As well, based on its tested Ru, QT is eligible for government energy savings initiatives ie: Manitoba Hydro Power Smart Program.

How many wall assemblies has Quik-Therm tested to ASTM C1363.
Over 30 wall assemblies have been tested to C1363. Results of these tests provide valuable data. This data allows QT to accurately estimate/model the effective R-value for many different thicknesses and types of wall assemblies.

Why did Quik-Therm choose the Effective R-value test method ASTM C1363, while other insulation manufacturers test their products for nominal R-value ie: ASTM C518?
Quik-Therm has tested to ASTM C518 (labeled R-value) and ASTM C1363 (effective R-value). New Canadian energy codes mandate the use of effective R-value. Since effective R-value is the standard, QT chose the test method based on the standard.

Solar Dry has a 3/16” deep drying plane gap occupying 80% of the panel. By having this gap, how much R-value is actually lost?
Tested to ASTM C1363 - Intertek/ATI compared two identical empty cavity wood fame wall assemblies. Wall 1: 2” QT Multi Purpose Insulation (no gap). Wall 2: 2" QT Solar Dry (3/16" gap). Results virtually identical: Effective R-13.2.

Does Building Science support the use of Solar Dry?
Yes. QT Solar Dry was developed based on findings by the Building Science Corporation (BSC).

Does ASHRAE support the use of Effective R-values?
Yes. ASHRAE 90.1, Table A3.1D (as an example) lists Effective R-values for insulation and framing in above and below grade walls.

Can ASHRAE effective R-values for cavity filled walls be added to QT effective R-values?
Yes. Example: ASHRAE Table A3.1D states R-12 fiberglass with wood studs performs effectively at R-9.8. As per C1363 test results, 2” QT performs effectively at R-13.2. Combining the ASHRAE fiberglass results and QT results together = Ru-23. To support Ru 23, QT tested this blended wall assembly to C1363. Result R-23.1. Note: The fiberglass insulation was R-13, not R-12. Potential Ru discrepancy less than R-1.

Is a double vapour barrier created by adding QT Connect or Multi Purpose Insulation (MPI) to a wall with a poly vapour barrier and batt insulation? Can double vapour barriers work?
Yes & Yes. MPI and Connect are effectively impermeable. Therefore when designed in conjunction with an interior poly vapour barrier, a double vapour barrier is created. However, walls with double vapour barriers can work. The key is to ensure the thickness of MPI or Connect is sufficient to keep the wall cavity warm. By doing so, the risk of condensation is significantly reduced. The thicker the exterior insulation, the warmer the cavity. The warmer the cavity the less chance for condensation.

Tested to ASTM C518, what is the nominal R-value for QT Type 1 & Type 2?
Type 1 (T1) = R-3.81 / Type 2 (T2) = R-4.18.
Why does Quik-Therm recommend T1 for some products and T2 for others?
Type 1 (T1) is used in products where softer material with less compressive strength is an asset. Type 2 (T2) is used where higher compressive strength is required. Examples: T1 is better suited for interior and exterior below grade concrete walls and basement floors. When insulation fits tight to a concrete wall, its effective R-value is enhanced. Concrete walls are typically rough with many imperfections. Since T1 is mouldable (pliable) it seals tighter to concrete than higher compressive strength insulations.
On the other hand, because T2 has a higher compressive strength than T1, T2 is better suited for Solar Dry (SDI). Fastening furring materials over SDI applies significant pressure. Since T2 has higher compressive strength than T1, the drying plane channels maintain a minimum 1/8” deep cavity.

What benefits do QT’s reflective polymer facers provide?
• Increase durability. QT does not easily chip, crack or break.
• Provides two impermeable barriers. With proper detailing (taping), some QT products meet code compliance as part of an air, vapour and/or radon barrier system. See "In The News" - Canada's Largest Passive House.
• Enhances the Effective R-value of assemblies.
• Generally provides an additional line of defence (e.g. WRB) as outlined by Canadian building codes.

Does QT off-gas and/or lose R-value over time?
No. QT has no Long Term Thermal Resistance loss (LTTR).

Through penetrations by fasteners, is it possible for QT to harbour mold between the polymer facers and its EPS core?
No. QT is made with inorganic materials and will not support mold.
